Flipping the Script on Scammers
The 2025 SCAM THE SCAMMERS Hackathon, powered by Apate.ai and Macquarie University Cyber Security Hub
Join the Mission
Join the mission to dismantle the global scam economy. The SCAM THE SCAMMERS Hackathon challenges students, engineers, and creators to build AI tools that outsmart scammers in real time. Work alongside Apate.ai’s engineers and mentors to design, test, and launch solutions that help stop scams before they reach people.
Our Mission
We exist to break the scammers’ business model globally by beating them at their own game.
Apate.ai equips telcos, banks, and governments with advanced conversational AI bots that prevent and disrupt scams at scale. Our technology delivers real-time intelligence to stay ahead of scam threats, tactics, techniques, and procedures, enabling fast, proactive responses to scam operations.
Our bot army engages scammers directly to collect intelligences from the mouths and keystrokes of the scammers themselves.

By participating in this Hackathon, you (the “Participant”) agree to the following terms:
Definitions
“Submission” means any and all material you (alone or with others) create, submit or otherwise generate during or in connection with the Hackathon — including but not limited to code (source and object), software, designs, documentation, data, inventions, algorithms, models, artwork, user interfaces, trademarks, trade-dress, logos, know-how, processes and any other intellectual or industrial property.
“Intellectual Property Rights” means all rights (whether registered or unregistered) related to copyright (including moral rights), trademarks, patents (and patentable inventions), designs, trade secrets, know-how, and any other proprietary rights in the Submission.
Assignment of IP
You hereby assign and transfer to Apate.ai all right, title and interest (including all Intellectual Property Rights) in and to your Submission, whether now known or created in the future, worldwide and for the full term of such rights. This includes all present and future rights, and all derivatives, modifications, improvements or expansions of the Submission.
The assignment is a present assignment, effective immediately upon creation or submission of the Submission.
Further Assurances
You agree to sign (or cause to be signed) any additional documents, and take any further actions, that Apate.ai may reasonably request, in order to fully effect, perfect or record the assignment and transfer of those rights (including assignments, recordal forms, declarations or similar).
You also agree to deliver to Apate.ai all source code, files, documentation, electronic assets or any other material relating to the Submission upon request.
Moral Rights / Waiver & Consent
To the extent permitted by applicable law, you:
- irrevocably waive (or consent to the waiver of) any moral rights in the Submission; and
- consent to any use, modification, adaptation, publication or exploitation of the Submission by Apate.ai (or its assignees), without attribution or further consent.
Representations & Warranties
You represent and warrant that:
- the Submission is your (or your team’s) original work;
- you own all rights in the Submission, or otherwise have the full legal right to assign those rights to Apate.ai;
- the Submission does not infringe or violate any third-party rights (including copyright, trademark, patent, trade secret or confidentiality obligations);
- the Submission is not subject to any third-party licence, lien, encumbrance, obligation or other restriction that would prevent or limit the assignment.
Consideration & Participation
You agree that your participation in the Hackathon (and any prizes, feedback, mentorship, exposure, or other benefit offered by Apate.ai and/or Macquarie University) constitutes adequate and sufficient consideration for the IP assignment, notwithstanding that no additional monetary payment may be made.
If you submit a winning Submission and accept a prize, that will not change or limit Apate.ai’s ownership of the Submission — all rights remain assigned as set out in these terms.
Use, Exploitation & Sub-licensing
Apate.ai shall have the exclusive, worldwide, perpetual, royalty-free right to use, reproduce, modify, distribute, license, sublicence, commercialise and otherwise exploit the Submission (in whole or in part), and to derive all benefits therefrom.
Apate.ai may assign or transfer these rights, or grant licences (exclusive or non-exclusive) to third parties, at its sole discretion.
Confidentiality & Third-Party Rights
If your Submission includes third-party material (e.g., libraries, data, artwork, code), you confirm that you have the right to include that material and to grant the assignment/licence you are granting to Apate.ai.
You agree not to submit any material you do not have the rights to, or any material bound by confidentiality obligations preventing their use by Apate.ai.
Governing Law & Jurisdiction
This agreement is governed by the laws of the State of New South Wales, Australia (or other as agreed). Any disputes arising under or in relation to these terms will be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of New South Wales.
